New Year’s Eve Fire Injures None

A fire broke out at approximately on the fourth floor of the building 133 N. Swall Dr. in Beverly Hills on the morning New Year’s Eve, according to the Beverly Hills Fire Department. After evacuating all residents of the four-story building, Beverly Hills fire fighters extinguished the fire and reported no injuries.

The fire broke out at 10:18 a.m. Fire companies from Beverly Hills, Los Angeles County and the City of Los Angeles responded and, with the help of Beverly Hills police officers, safely evacuated approximately 50-70 residents of the building. An exotic parrot was taken to the roof to escape the smoke and heat. Firefighters moved personnel and equipment to the fire quickly and were able to confine the fire to the one apartment unit.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Battalion Chief of the Beverly Hills Fire Department John Karns Jr. said, but preliminary evidence shows that it may have been caused by heat from charcoals igniting furniture on the fourth-floor patio.

Ben Stein Remembers Ford’s Courage, Values

Beverly Hills resident Ben Stein remembered former President Gerald R. Ford, whom he wrote speeches for and who died Dec. 26 at the age of 93, as “a small-town guy” with “no pretence at all,” “but guts.”

Analysts cite Ford’s pardon of his predecessor, Richard M. Nixon, one month after taking office on Aug. 9, 1974 as a key reason for his defeat by Jimmy Carter in the 1976 presidential election.

“Wow did he have guts to pardon Nixon when the liberal media were screaming for his blood,” Stein, who was also a speech writer for Nixon, said on “CBS Sunday Morning,” “to spare the nation that agony, and to deprive the media of the circus they wanted.”
